FORMS OF EXPRESSION

The municipality has orchestras, choirs, theater groups and companies, artists and writers that characterize Lençóis Paulista as a city that presents multiple forms of artistic expression ranging from dance and music to literature and performing arts.

A highlight is the Casa da Cultura “Profª. Maria Bove Coneglian”, which is located in the building of the former Lençóis Hotel and houses the Secretariat of Culture and the Auditorium where theater, dance , music, video and other performances take place.

Furthermore, it is also the location of the current rehearsal room of the Municipal Wind Orchestra “Maestro Agostinho Duarte Martins”, an expansion that began in 2007 and was completed in 2008, becoming part of the complex.

Among the city's forms of expression, we highlight:

The Lençóis Paulista Municipal Wind Orchestra is a reference throughout the country. Its activities began in July 1995, and it is an entity maintained by the City Hall itself. In 1997, Maestro Marcelo Ricardo Maganha took over the orchestra and brought technical improvement, variety of repertoire, and training of new musicians.

The Municipal Orchestra aims to contribute to cultural growth and bring instrumental music to everyone. It currently has approximately 50 musicians. It has a broad repertoire, ranging from classical to popular and folkloric, always seeking a high aesthetic/artistic standard in the compositions or arrangements performed.

Unimed Children's Choir

The Zillo Lorenzetti Choir was founded in 1983, under the name of Coral da Usina Barra Grande, a sugar mill in the city, as a leisure and cultural option for the company's employees. Other members of the Lençóis community joined the group, even if they were not employees of the company.

Since 1995, it has been called Coral Zillo Lorenzetti, and is sponsored by Grupo Zilor, of which Usina Barra Grande is a part. Currently, there are 50 members, with Izabel Cristina Campanari Lorenzetti and Célia Bianchini conducting, accompanied by musicians Tiago Giorgetti Costa (keyboard) and Binho Ornellas (percussion).

The project has always been characterized as an opportunity open to the entire community, integrating people from different areas, genders and ages.

The Choir is already a landmark in the cultural history of Lençóis. Founded in 1999, it was born from a partnership between UNIMED and the Municipal Government. It serves and assists children from the 3rd to the 6th grade, currently counting 54 children from the city.

This is another social project that Unimed is developing in Lençóis Paulista, which goes beyond teaching the art of singing in a group. Working on values, respect for others, and teamwork is also part of the learning process through music. In addition to encouraging self-confidence and self-awareness through musical art and the fascination that music exerts on the human soul, the artistic-social action provides basic food baskets, uniforms, gifts on commemorative dates, and weekly rehearsals.

Acts & Scenes Theatre Company

The Atos & Cenas Theatre Company was founded on September 22, 1989, in the city of Lençóis Paulista (SP) with the objective of promoting theatre and, consequently, art. Over the years, the company has solidified its foundations and established itself as a theatrical reference in the interior of São Paulo state. It was once a production center of the Cooperativa Paulista de Teatro (São Paulo Theatre Cooperative), and today it has its own CNPJ (Brazilian tax ID). It maintained its headquarters at the Casa da Cultura “Profª. Maria Bove Coneglian” for 24 years, and currently has its headquarters at Espaço Atos & Cenas, where it conducts rehearsals, research, workshops, courses, and various projects, as well as seasons of its productions. In addition to the critical education of the audience (children, young people, and adults), the team works in theatre education, sharing experiences and knowledge with the community.

Its main characteristic remains researching authors, styles, languages, and genres in pursuit of technical and artistic quality.

Since its founding, the team has been building a collection of costumes, sets, and a theatrical library with over a thousand titles.

The Independent Presbyterian Church, the first protestant church in Lençóis Paulista, was built on December 15, 1880. One of its pastors was the Reverend Vicente Themudo Lessa, a great scholar of the Sacred Scriptures, who, combined with his culture and intelligence, was also the author of several Christian books.

Reverend Vicente Themudo Lessa was the father of the writer Orígenes Lessa, one of the many illustrious sons of Lençóis Paulista. Currently, it has a temple, recently restructured, next to the first church, with capacity for 500 people.

The first temple, affectionately called “Igrejinha (Little Church)” is still maintained, which denotes its ecclesiastical importance in the city.
