Características
The jaguar is the largest feline in the Americas, with a robust body, broad head, and powerful jaws. Its coat is yellow with black rosette-shaped spots that vary in size and shape. It can weigh up to 150 kg and measure up to 2.4 meters in length, including the tail.
Ocorrência
Distributed throughout much of Latin America, the jaguar is found in tropical forests, savannas, and swampy areas, with significant populations in the Amazon and Pantanal.
Comportamento
The jaguar is a solitary animal, except during mating season. It is territorial and an excellent swimmer, frequently seen near rivers and lakes. It hunts mainly at dusk and at night.
Alimentação
It is an apex predator with a varied diet that includes large mammals such as capybaras, tapirs, and deer, as well as alligators, fish, and birds. Its powerful bite allows it to pierce turtle shells and the skulls of large prey.
Reprodução
Reproduction occurs throughout the year. After a gestation period of approximately 93 to 105 days, the female gives birth to 1 to 4 pups, which she cares for exclusively. The pups remain with their mother for up to two years.
Preservação
The jaguar is classified as vulnerable, facing threats such as habitat loss, illegal hunting, and conflicts with farmers. Conservation programs include the creation of ecological corridors and the protection of critical habitat areas.
Curiosidades
The jaguar has the strongest bite among big cats, capable of crushing bones.
It is one of the few feline species that enjoys swimming, and is frequently seen hunting in the water.
