Características

Also known as puma or mountain lion, the cougar is a large feline with a uniform coat that varies from grayish-yellow to reddish-brown. It can weigh between 30 and 80 kg and measure up to 2.5 meters in length, including its long tail.

Ocorrência

The puma has a wide distribution, occurring from Canada to southern South America. In Brazil, it is found in various biomes, including the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, Amazon, and Pantanal.

Comportamento

It is a solitary and territorial animal, preferring to hunt at dawn and dusk. The puma is known for its ability to adapt to different environments, from dense forests to mountainous and semi-arid areas.

Alimentação

Their diet consists mainly of medium to large mammals, such as deer, capybaras, and armadillos. They may also hunt birds, small rodents, and occasionally domestic animals.

Reprodução

Reproduction can occur at any time of year, with a gestation period of about 95 days. The female usually gives birth to 3 to 4 pups, which are raised alone by the mother until they become independent, around 18 to 24 months of age.

Preservação

The puma is threatened by habitat loss, conflict with humans, and hunting. Conservation efforts include the creation of protected areas and educating the public about the importance of large predators.

Curiosidades

The puma is the terrestrial mammal with the widest geographic distribution in the Western Hemisphere.
Despite its size, it is known for its ability to jump great distances, up to 6 meters horizontally.
