BARON OF AVANHANDAVA

José Emygdio de Almeida Cardia was a member of an illustrious family that owned Fazenda do Porto, where there was a mansion and facilities for the ferry service to cross the Tietê River. When D. Pedro II visited the region, José Emygdio received the title of Baron of Avanhandava, the last title of nobility conferred by the emperor.

COLONEL JOAQUIM ANSELMO MARTINS

A member of one of the first families that settled in the Fartura neighborhood, close to the Alfredo Guedes District, Joaquim Anselmo Martins always lived in that neighborhood and formed a large family there. A farmer and major coffee producer, he had an active political life for decades in the city, having been a councilor and mayor. The Colonel, as he was known, donated the image of Nossa Senhora da Piedade to the city's Main Church.

COLONEL VIRGILIO ROCHA

Virgílio Rocha was, in fact, the first mayor of Lençóis, taking office in 1908 and re-elected several times. During his terms, the city gained a telephone network, electricity supply and the first School Group, in addition to other improvements. Seriously ill, he boarded a special train for treatment in the capital, but died on the journey.

LAUREANA

Laureana Maria Joaquina was an enslaved woman who came from Minas Gerais after the abolition of slavery, along with other people in the same condition. She became a popular figure in the city and, already a widow, she died in her wattle and daub house, on Rua Treze de Maio, on the morning of August 7, 1954, at more than a hundred years of age, becoming known as by “Macróbia” due to his advanced age.

MALUF

The Maluf Family lived in the Alfredo Guedes District. In 1939, an employee of the Sorocabana railway argued with Miguel Maluf regarding a tree that stood on the border between the Maluf property and the railway area. According to the employee, the tree should be cut down, which Miguel did not accept. The argument escalated, to the point where Salim, Miguel's son, intervened, being attacked and killed with a blow from a digger by the employee. Wounded, Miguel died days later.

MARIA FRANCISCA

Maria Francisca lived with her brothers and parents on the Boa Vista farm, near Alfredo Guedes. At the age of 22, already engaged, she was about to get married when she began having seizures that were seen as demonic possession. A friend advised the family to have exorcism sessions and taught Lígia, his sister, how to proceed. The ritual lasted three days. On the fourth day, Maria Francisca passed away. It was July 1924. The doctor who signed the death determined the cause: genital psychosis.

TEREZINHA GIRL

In 1944, a girl named Terezinha Vicente lived in the Paranhos region. At 9 years old, the girl was rushed to Nossa Senhora da Piedade Hospital, where she ended up dying. Some years later, for unclear reasons, after removing his remains from the earth, due to non-payment for the same, his body was intact. Stories of miracles are attributed to the girl Terezinha. His tomb is one of the most visited to date.

ORÍGENES LESSA

One of the great names in Brazilian literature, Orígenes Lessa was born in Lençóis Paulista, in 1903, and died in Rio de Janeiro, in 1986. He was a journalist, short story writer, novelist, novelist, and one of his novels, O Feijão e o Sonho, It was adapted into a television soap opera. Orígenes was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, where he held chair number 10. Even though he lived in other cities, including outside Brazil, he never forgot his homeland and preferred to be buried here.

THE POISONED

Six people from three families are buried in this tomb, who died during lunch at Dona Mariana Cordeiro's house, on a farm on the outskirts of the city, when a baptism was being celebrated. A large portion of white arsenic was found in the house along with a packet of flour, which led to the suspicion that the arsenic used to eliminate grasshoppers had been mistakenly used instead of flour to prepare homemade pasta.

OSÓRIO DE OLIVEIRA

Osório de Oliveira was a pharmacist who, at the age of 28, died as a result of a shot he received from a 15-year-old married girl, who claimed in her defense to have been attacked alone in her home, by him, on the night of the 28th of January 1910. Wounded in the hospital, Osório gave another version: he was at home when a young woman came forward, took a revolver from under her apron and shot him. Behind this story, there was a turbulent political environment in Lençóis, pitting “civilians” and “military” in confrontation.
